sheer swim wear: well for one thing, today the sport is at its pinnacle (so far) in terms of really great performers. the sheer number of swimmers who swim competitevely around the world dwarfs the number back in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. i am not ignorant nor predisposed against the history of swimming. its no more biased towards today to say that tiger or jordan are the greatest ever at what they do. typically, in most history rich sports you hold a special deference to the past. however, because of the growth of swimming, the sheer talents of many of today's swimmers wear eclipse those of the past in terms of depth and ability. still, because of the comparative discrepancy between it and sports such as athletics (track), swimming has a steeper improvement curve. you are more likely to discover a person who runs fast or jumps high/far than someone that swims fast. that is why elite track is more accessible to the third world at the moment.
