cheap swim wear: the first shorts i got like this was by accident. i bought a pair of nice shorts without trying them on and did not realize until i got home that they had a liner and were meant for swimming. i went ahead and tried them on with the intention of taking them back thinking that since they were swim trunk they wound't be comfy, but they were, and they had been on sale for cheap so i decided to keep them. they were soon my fav shorts and so i bought another pair. now i have like 20 pairs of swim trunks (i wear shorts most of the time). the nice part is that they look no different than regular shorts and they dry very quickly. they are also very light and pack small so you can carry a pair with you in a fanny pack, backpack, or whatever and change into them if you need 'em or stow them if you change into something more suitable for an evening engagement or whatever.
cheap swim wear: i use bike shoes but don't wear socks as they are a pita to deal with after i am wet from the swim. i use socks on the run however. for shorts, i use biking shorts that have only the chamois and no padding, (or just a tiny bit). cheap and very comfortable. i wear this for the whole event. something i've found to be helpful is a race belt. no more using safety pins on my shirts/shorts and having them get ruined. depending on the temperature, i use a tri/running singlet to help keep the moisture away from my body as much as possible. don't forget the bodyglide/pam for your neck to protect you from your wetsuit chaffing. i use it on my nipples as well and it works ok. sunglasses are nice to have on the bike and run. i have seen folks with a small dishpan of water to get sand and crud off their feet for the bike; i just use a water bottle and squirt it and have extra towels there. one race i did had us run a mile from the swim to the bike transition area so i scooped up water in my swim cap as i was exiting the swim and used that before putting on my shoes. cheap swim wear: in brisbane, we don't own a heater, and have ceiling fans which are cheap to run in the summer. if it's cold on winter nights, we wear pullovers. if it's hot on summer days, we swim in the pool (you don't have to be rich to have a pool). so there's a chunk of the dole money that doesn't have to be spent. add to that - summer clothes are a lot cheaper than winter clothes (and you need less of them!), so the clothing bills are much less. none of us own a jacket or coat. cheap swim wear: when i was at school we had to wear these thin speedo-like swimming trunks under our shorts as a support for most sports (we wore them for swimming too, of course). you could get them at school, the idea being that you couldn't forget to bring them and avoid swimming. they were cheap as well. cheap swim wear: wear the suit anyway, and just accept a shorter life cycle for it. buy the cheap alternate suit. or go without - people swim in san francisco bay year round with nothing more than the baracuda cap. i find even in the summer i can only swim about 30 minutes though (water temp at ~58). | |
