catalina swim wear: snorkeling off casa de campo, catalina island is good. there is a separate area of the water roped off for snorkelers and we had a good wear time exploring it on our recent trip on the millennium. however, be sure to get into the water early before other swimmers and the tenders obscure your visibility! you will want to start by swimming out beyond the wooden raft at the end of the snorkeling area, and then wear work your way back against the current--makes for a less tiring swim!
catalina swim wear: k-earth's theory is supported by that woman who has done all the marathon wear butterfly swimming (forget her name; she's been discussed here in the past). i distinctly remember watching a local tv news video clip of her catalina island to san pedro butterfly swim (22 miles of butterfly). she swam with a slow wear armstroke and a minimally-undulating body. just kind of kept her body flat in the water (like freestyle), kept her legs together (to remain "legal") and recovered with a "legal" butterfly armstroke.

catalina swim wear: when we got out of the water, the "eights" were showing up. the swim groups at la jolla cove are named for the hour they go swimming. there are the "sixes", "eights", "elevenses", etc. the eights are mostly wear retired ladies or gents, people who don't have a work schedule. soon, there were probably 15 people standing around, mostly old broads, with a couple of fat geezer guys. they were laughing and talking with the cameraderie of years of hanging out at the beach together. i think the wear youngest has three kids, and left "babeage" behind her not too long ago. still, as i looked at this group getting ready to enter the water, it occured to me a stranger would think these are some of the least fit geriatrics around. the speedos were not kind to the wrinkles and excess skin. but i counted at least four who have swum the english channel in the last 10 years, and several others who have done the catalina channel or the straits of juan de fuca. i doubt any reef girl could hold a candle to these "old broads" in the water.
